Nooks That Nurture
It's book fair week, which is the perfect excuse to talk about reading nooks in playrooms (my personal favorite zone and arguably the most important).
The routine of settling into a cozy nook helps children internalize the idea that reading is special. It’s their invitation to pause, to explore, and to give the moment their full attention.
When you carve out a space specifically for stories, you’re sending a quiet but powerful message: reading is worth slowing down for. It becomes an experience rather than an activity.
From a design perspective, a reading zone anchors the room with warmth and purpose. It gives children a predictable place to return to when they crave calm or connection.
And for parents, it subtly encourages more shared reading experiences, which research consistently shows is foundational for language development, empathy, and early literacy skills.
When a playroom includes a thoughtfully designed reading nook, it becomes more than a place to store books. It becomes a small sanctuary.
